Overview:
As a Mechanical Engineer/Lead Designer your role would involve working with both external project teams and internal Design teams to develop the Mechanical designs for a variety of buildings. This role would require the individual to take the lead role on all technical Design requirements for assigned projects, project management, coordination with other disciplines, client building, management of the Mechanical team, and Contract Administration requirements throughout construction.
Provide consultation with clients (owners and architects) on initial Mechanical Engineering designs including options for systems, space planning exercises, and general consultation, take the lead on all technical requirements for Mechanical systems from preliminary designs phases through to project completion including coordinating Mechanical services (and other services) for new Construction, design of heating ventilation, air conditioning systems, plumbing systems, and drainage systems. Experience with load calculation software such as HAP, or energy modelling software, and other Mechanical requirements to suit client standards and building classifications.
Responsibilities would include attending Design meetings to represent the Electrical discipline, selecting relevant equipment, reviewing and verifying design calculations for Electrical systems, management of Intermediate and Junior Electrical team members, overseeing the production of Design documentation assigned projects including the presentation of information on drawing sets, coordination of electrical systems with Mechanical, Architectural, and other disciplines, and Contract Administration requirements.
Additional management duties would include overseeing and managing the workload of intermediate and junior staff members to ensure deadlines for projects are met, training and mentorship for intermediate and junior staff, conduct performance reviews for staff with the Mechanical Department Manager, and other internal management requirements.
Projects may include working on Residential (low and high-rise), Educational projects (public and private schools, post-secondary institutions), Commercial projects (box stores, base buildings, etc.), Institutional projects (public sector facilities), Industrial facilities, Retirement/Long-term Care facilities, and a variety of other projects.
Qualifications and Required Skills:
- Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.), or Limited Engineering License/Technologist (LEL, LET).
- Ten (10) plus years of Electrical Engineering experience in the Building Service industry.
- Extensive technical knowledge and ability to deliver Mechanical designs for a variety of building types including, but not limited to, power and distribution, lighting, lighting controls, fire alarm, life safety systems, generators, and other auxiliary systems such as IT, A/V, and communications.
- Experience in Commercial, Educational, Retail, Residential, and/or Healthcare/Long-term Care buildings is an asset.
- Extensive knowledge of relevant Canadian and Ontario codes and standards (OBC, Gas Code, ASHRAE 55, 62.1 and 90.1, NFPA, etc.).
- Proven ability to manage a team of 3 to 4 Mechanical staff in the development and delivery of Construction documentation and associated Engineering calculations, coordination of Electrical elements, and final verification of Mechanical design.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, ability to think analytically, attention to detail, resourceful and detail-oriented, and team and customer service focused.
- Working knowledge of Electrical, Architectural, and Structural drawings and systems as it relates to Construction and the implications on Mechanical designs.
- Ability to effectively resolve Construction issues, manage client expectations, review construction sites, liaise with Contractors, and other Contract Administration requirements.
